The topic title is rather like the Subject of an e-mail.

If you received an e-mail with "I have this great offer for you" and after reading the contents of the e-mail you wanted further information or clarification, you would reply to that e-mail, possibly including (quoting) the original message.

If however, you wanted to reply to the e-mail sender about an unrelated matter, you would send a new e-mail message.

Forums work in the same way.

The topic is the subject.

The Reply should always be related to the subject.

I understand that the reply should be connected to the topic, but what if you have a question or comment which is not covered?

Also, why are Forum Moderators so strict?

Two good questions which turn something so simple to understand into a nightmare of confusion.

If the question or comment is not related to the topic then by rights it should have its own topic. This is where the forum search comes into its own. This will be covered in more detail later, but the search button or link can be used to great effect to see if someone else has posted a similar topic or post. Often the question you have will already have been stared, and possibly replied to.
(Understandably, duplicate posts upset forum Moderators as they are busy people and consider this a waste of their time.)

Sometimes, however, the forum will only permit certain members to create new topics.

In this case, after your search as yielded no results - and after looking through the help files - it is to the forum Moderators you should turn for guidance. A polite PM (Private message) is generally the best method, as they can decide if your suggestion warrants having its own topic , have the authority to create one, or whether they can simply reply to you personally.

Anyone who has been involved with forums for a while will know the reason why Moderators are strict. They have to make sure everyone adheres to the rules and also that the topic does not get hi-jacked onto a completely different subject.

If anyone wants to try their hand at being a Moderator for these training forums (only these training forums, I am not that trusting wink.gif ) PM me and I may let you have a play.

I have found this method usually gains "Moderator Respect" the fastest.
